Lesson FAQs

Where are piano lessons held?

I teach from my home, about 5 minutes south of Greytown in South Wairarapa.

What days are lessons on?

I teach on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

How young is too young to learn the piano?

I teach children from age 7 (or close to) and up.

Parent involvement is crucial for 7 year olds.  You will need to attend lessons and sit with your child at home to support their practice.

If your child is not yet 7, you can contact me to go on my waiting list.

What is the right age to start learning the piano?

Children start learning the piano at very different ages.  Older children usually progress faster then younger children so it can even out in the end.  The key thing is that the child wants to learn the piano and they have the support at home to do regular practice.

Do I need previous music experience to play the piano?

No previous experience is needed to learn to play the piano – just a willingness to try and an openness to new experiences.  Lessons will be adapted to your needs, interests, capabilities and goals.

As a parent, do I stay and watch the lesson?

It is good for parents of young beginners to attend lessons.  This helps you understand what your child is learning so you can support them in their home practice.

Once the student becomes familiar with their practice routine and more confident with piano playing, they will become more self sufficient.

As this process is very individual to the child, I am happy to discuss this with you and agree the best approach for your child.

How do we get started?

Before the first lesson we have a meet and greet, so you (parent and child, or new student) can come and meet me and we can have a chat about lessons and what you want from them.

At this time I will also get you to fill out an enrolment form and we will go through the studio policies.  This is a good time to ask any questions you haven't got round to asking yet.

How much do piano lessons cost?

Please see the Term Dates, Fees and Policies page.

Do I need a piano or can I use a keyboard?

It is recommended that you have an acoustic piano or an 88 key digital piano at home to practice on in between lessons.

A 75 key touch sensitive keyboard can be sufficient if you are just starting out and deciding if piano lessons are for you.   Find out more about what you need to have at home.
