Where are piano lessons held?
I teach from my home, about 5 minutes south of Greytown in South Wairarapa.
How young is too young to learn the piano?
I teach children from age 5 and up. Lessons for 5 and 6 year olds include games and activities away from the piano (as well as plenty of piano playing). These help build musicianship and reinforce concepts in different ways to make learning the piano fun.
Parent involvement is crucial for 5 and 6 year olds. You will need to attend lessons and sit with your child at home to support their practice.
What is the right age to start learning the piano?
Children start learning the piano at very different ages. Older children usually progress faster then younger children so it can even out in the end. The key thing is that the child wants to learn the piano and they have the support at home to do regular practice.
Do I need previous music experience to play the piano?
No previous experience is needed to learn to play the piano – just a willingness to try and an openness to new experiences. Lessons will be adapted to your needs, interests, capabilities and goals.
As a parent, do I stay and watch the lesson?
It is good for parents of young beginners to attend lessons. This helps you understand what your child is learning so you can support them in their home practice.
Once the student becomes familiar with their practice routine and more confident with piano playing, they will become more self sufficient.
As this process is very individual to the child, I am happy to discuss this with you and agree the best approach for your child.
How do we get started?
Before the first lesson we have a meet and greet, so you (parent and child, or new student) can come and meet me and we can have a chat about lessons and what you want from them.
At this time I will also get you to fill out an enrolment form and we will go through the studio policies. This is a good time to ask any questions you haven't got round to asking yet.
How much do piano lessons cost?
Please CONTACT ME to inquire about lessons and tuition fees.
Do I need a piano or can I use a keyboard?
It is recommended that you have an ACOUSTIC or DIGITAL PIANO at home to practice on in between lessons.
A 75 key touch sensitive keyboard can be sufficient if you are just starting out and deciding if piano lessons are for you. Find out more about what you need to have at home.
